Our mom is kind and funny and hardworking.  You are likely to have run into her bustling around the shop many times during the past twenty-two years.  Brought up in southern Germany during WWII, she was wooed away from her homeland by our Dad, a U.S. Army Lieutenant stationed near her hometown after the Korean War.  When we were growing up, Mom didn’t have much experience with fast foods, so we didn’t get many trips to McDonald’s, but it wasn’t until I was in the Sixth Grade and having a slumber party that I realized other kids weren’t used to homemade spice cake and tea for breakfast!   As far as trade-offs , I feel like we came out ahead.  Another happy memory I have is of our frequent “Betthupferls” (which translates roughly to “something to hop in bed with.”)  Yes, a nighttime sweet AFTER you have already brushed your teeth!   Are you starting to get the picture how Mike, Nina and I ended up with a shop like The Kobuk?  Tea, spice cake, marzipan at bed time….  Our childhood was The Kobuk in training!  Come on down the month of May and get your Mom a treat.  If she was half as good to you as ours has been to us, she deserves it.  We have created a few fun gift baskets, like the Klondike Kate pictured here, that we are offering at 20% off the month of May.
